Smooth Text

If you’re tired of crappy HTML headlines and titles with only a handful of fonts to choose from then you need to check out SiFR. It uses Flash, JavaScript and CSS to make accessible, beautifully rendered text in the font of your choice.

I use it for the headlines on this site and from what I’ve seen so far it’s pretty neat. As a bonus it’s also standards compliant. I’ve started using this at work for give an extra little kick to custom dynamic templates. It sizes and scales to fit in the specified area as well, so if it gets populated with to much text it scales down to the correct size.

The way it works is that you write your HTML like normal and then as the browser renders your page if Flash and JavaScript are enabled it replaces the text for the HTML tags or CSS classes you’ve specified. So if you set it to have all H1 tags to use Garamond Light Condensed then anything falling between your opening and closing H1 tag gets turned into your fancy font.

Pretty cool.

You should give it a try.
